LoC: Sadaqah / Zakaat

Sadaqah is an entirely voluntary charity, that can be performed at any time of year, and any amount can be given. However, Zakat is an obligatory charity due from every Muslim whose total possessions (cash, gold, silver, shares) meet or exceed the nisab threshold on a yearly basis.

Zakat has a number of stipulations regarding the type of assistance it can provide. However, Sadaqah can be used for any project or programme which is of benefit to people. In a number of sayings, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emphasised the benefits of giving Sadaqah.

What is Sadaqah?

There are two types of Sadaqah; Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah.

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity. It is given for the sole purpose of pleasing Allah (SWT), without expecting anything in return. It encompasses any act of charitable giving done out of compassion, love, friendship or generosity. It can be given to anyone and has no limits or guidelines.

Sadaqah Jariyah, or continuous charity, refers to acts of charity that continue to benefit others even after the donor has passed away, such as building a mosque, water well or a school.

What is Zakaat?

Zakat is a sacred obligation of every able Muslim and one of the Five Pillars of Islam, rooted in the principles of compassion and justice. It is a powerful form of charity that requires Muslims with wealth to donate a portion of it to those in need, including orphans, individuals in debt, those who are stranded during travel, and those who live in poverty. By honouring the responsibility to serve those who are less fortunate, Muslims demonstrate their devotion and connection to Allah.

What is Zakaat-al-fitr?

Zakat al Fitr, otherwise known as Fitrah, or Fitrana, Muslims are reminded of their duty to give back to society, and to pay Zakat al-Fitr, a mandatory donation that must be made before the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. This sacred act requires Muslims who have excess food to offer a small handful of it to those who are in need during the holy month of Ramadan.

How much Zakaat do I need to give?

“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (a continuous charity), or knowledge from which benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
